Berlin in Seven Parts (Day 7: Easter at the Britzer Gardens and Farewell)
We awoke late on Easter Sunday, still digesting the tremendous German meal of the night before. After some quick packing, we decided to go visit the Britzer Garten -- a kind of botanical park -- on the recommendation of Mindi's husband. With no shops open and yet another beautiful day, it seemed like the best use of a final, leisurely day in Berlin.
This was the scene on our thoroughfare street that morning. Eerily tranquil compared to its usual traffic. Even Curry 36 has no queue today, which means . . .
CURRYWURST FOR BREAKFAST!! Quickest takeaway order of all time. You can see my astonished happiness as I'm about to eat alone and unhurried. (However, somehow, it's not as tasty if you don't suffer for it...)
At the U-Bahn station before our journey, Na'ama visits the ATM, which reminds us to "beware of tricksters". I think she is the trickster because she's in the photo.
After a few U-Bahn rides and one bus ride, we arrive at the Britzer Garten, which are located in the quieter southern suburbs of Berlin, not far from the airfield that was used by the Berlin Airlift. Tulips are in season, and while it's not quite the Skagit Valley, it's a beautiful sight. The weather, as per this week, is wonderful.
A petting zoo with bunnies. This was Easter enough that we couldn't pass it up.
Many families were at the gardens for an Easter picnic, complete with blankets and flatware and bunny-themed chocolate. Even though we didn't have our picnic setup, it was fun to watch.
Sunday by the lake.
Every so often there would be a manicured garden section with the topiary bushes and fountains. This one looks like it was out of something by Dali.
At the southern end of the park was this amazing green lawn with giant rolling hills that seemed to go on forever. The people sitting in the foreground will give you an idea of the scale here. If you look closely, there are kids running up and down the slope of the hill, and there was certainly much rolling down as well.
Small white flowers by the lake. Afterward, we take a bus to the U-Bahn,
And then the U-Bahn back to Kreutzberg. I took this shot because the sky color was nearly the same as the U-Bahn sign.
Kreutzberg is sleepy today, but there are a few cyclists.
Windows of the closed shops are full of Easter swag.
After a brief last walk through Kreutzberg, it's check-out time. Then, back on the U-Bahn to the main train station, and after some brief shopping, it's back on the train. End Day 7.
Berlin was a lot of fun. I hope you enjoyed reading about it. Auf wiedersehen, and watch this space...
